It started off in Swindon seemed like such a clever plan
Giving out thousands of plastic cards
To replace cash in your hand
“It’ll mean the end of mugging”, the organisers claimed
To give you more convenience is our major aim

The test was so successful next the scheme went national
But to give away cards and machines
On this scale wasn’t rational
So small charges were levied, not enough to cause alarm
With the benefits that were offered
A one-off fee could do no harm

The cards became accepted and the costs became more bold
You couldn’t spend cash anywhere they had you in their hold
Wages and social benefits were paid straight to your account
The system worked so easily, few had any doubts

The Government rubbed their hands
They’d got in through the back door
A foolproof ID system, they couldn’t have wished for more
Just by inspecting records they could check your every move
And could always add a few if they had anything to prove

Joe Public held his head in his hands
Thought back to better days
When he had a personal life that wasn’t constantly surveyed
Analyse it as he might
He couldn’t see where he’d gone wrong
He’d put his trust in business and Government…
