lyrics

The politicians sat around the table with their friends
Smarmy captains of industry and some accounting pens
They all had a problem with no solution in sight
It looked as though the meeting would last way into the night
The trouble was the Government had sold all that they’d took
From the people over many years and now were going broke
They’d been locked in for many hours and couldn’t find a way
When someone stood, and in an excited voice began to say

The answer as I see it is to sell something they need
And make it seem like their idea to counter claims of greed
Let’s pump pollution into the air ‘til people cough and wheeze
Then once the smog gets bad enough they’ll buy clean air to breathe

He stopped and cast a glance o’er the people sitting there
Following a pregnant pause they all began to cheer
The idea was so simple, it was the greatest scam
Since the mass selling of arms to both Iraq and Iran
They set to work immediately, car prices took a drop
Carbon monoxide levels soared way over the top
When the public clamoured for a fix to the pollution
They started selling shares in the new Oxygen Commission

They all came back to celebrate months later in the bar
They’d all had doubts the public would let them go so far
But shares had sold tremendously and no one seemed to mind
Walking round like space explorers on this brown and poisoned land

The moral of this story, just in case I’m being vague
Is that relying on the Government’s like welcoming the plague
Along with the industrialists there’s one thing on their mind
How much they can screw you for, and that’s the bottom line
